The 21st Century is placing new demands on local economies. The ability to move people and freight through Southwest Connecticut is an increasing challenge. Yet, the Bridgeport Port Authority is ready for the challenges of this new world economy.
In the past few years the BPA has instituted the following initiatives:
- Acquisition and development of the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex home to the Derecktor's shipyards.
- Working with the Army Corp of Engineers to dredge Bridgeport Harbor (last dredged in the 1960’s)
- Development of High Speed Ferry service between Bridgeport, Stamford and New York
- Installation of numerous port security measures at Port Owned facilities
- Provide Pump Out Boat service to recreational vessels in Bridgeport’s waters
Connecticut's Port of Bridgeport, located in the heart of the most densely populated region in the United States, provides an accessible and non-congested gateway to the entire Northeast. The BPA through its management initiatives is committed to serving the needs of the global business community and to passengers seeking an alternative means of transportation between the state of Connecticut and points along the eastern seaboard .
More than 5 million tons of goods flow into Bridgeport’s harbors, the second most active port in the state. They include fruit , coal, sand, gravel, stone, gasoline, and oil.
The BPA serves as the guarantee for FTZ76. This Federal program facilitates trade and increases the global competitiveness of U.S. based companies. The FTZ is an area within the United States that the government considers outside of the U.S. Customs territory. Certain merchandise can be imported and exported without having to pay Customs duties while in the FTZ zone. Duties may also be deferred or reduced in addition to being eliminated, lowering costs for businesses.
Once home to companies involved in the steel industry, 837 Seaview Avenue is a 43 acre parcel bordered by Seaview Avenue, Bridgeport Harbor and the Yellow Mill river. The last owner closed down its operations at the site in the early 1980's - leaving the property vacant, unused and unsafe in its as-is state. The property is impacted by many adverse conditions, including steel byproducts, extensive demolition debris and buried building remnants; an extensive fuel oil spill; and widespread soil contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons and metals including arsenic, lead, nickel, etc.
The Bridgeport Port Authority acquired title to the property in 1999 and since that time has worked diligently to remediate the site and redevelop it into the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex (BRMC) - dedicated for use by water-dependent industries.

Today, the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex offers a secure, deep water port facility location in Bridgeport Harbor with unobstructed access to Long Island Sound.
The BPA is proud of its several economic development and engineering excellence awards, which have recognized its efforts and vision for the last 15 years.
- 2005 – American Councils of Engineering Companies for the construction and development of the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex,
- 003 – EDDY (Economic Development Award) for the development of BRMC,
