BRIDGEPORT - In response to the community need for more housing in the East End, The Bridgeport Port Authority has sold 3.9 acres of property to a development company for the scheduled construction of condominiums at the former Carpenter Technology Corporation property site.
The Kaleng Development Company of Fairfield has agreed to purchase the property for the construction of 54 condo units. The City of Bridgeport Department of Planning and Zoning has already approved the project named, “Camelot Condominiums,” which is scheduled to begin construction this spring.
Joseph A. Riccio, executive director of the BPA, thought his agency and state and local elected representatives worked well together to address a need in the East End. In particular, he applauded the work of State Representative Donald Clemens, State Senator Edward Gomes and City Councilman James Holloway and members of the East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone.
“The group of leaders was committed to putting the land to good use for their constituents. They made an impassioned plea to us that persuaded us that the sale of the development of the land for housing was the best use,” Riccio said. “They worked very hard to keep the project on track.”
Mayor John Fabrizi also supported the sale of the land for condos because it put the land to good use for the people of the East End.
“I am in support of this project moving forward,” Fabrizi said. “It’s an important housing development in the East End, and is consistent with the East End Neighborhood development plan.”
BPA seized the 48 acres of property for development in 1999 from Car Tech.. Originally, the BPA sought to utilize 3.9 acres for commercial development, which proved not to be feasible.
The BPA is a quasi-public entity that has jurisdiction over the entire Bridgeport Harbor port. It also operates the ferry terminal facility, Water Street Dock, Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex, which is the home of Derecktor Shipyards, and has jurisdiction over several marine cargo terminals.
